Pre Session Preparations
How to prepare your body and mind for the best possible result.
Please note:This is Inkspot's standard guidance. Your artist may provide their own instructions — always follow what your artist tells you for your specific tattoo.
A little preparation makes your tattoo session smoother, less painful, and easier to heal. Follow these steps in the days leading up to your appointment.
The week before
- Avoid sunburn and heavy tanning on the area to be tattooed.
- Keep the skin moisturised daily so it is supple and healthy.
- Avoid blood-thinning medication (such as aspirin) unless prescribed — check with your doctor.
The night before
- Get a full night’s sleep — rested skin and a rested body handle the session far better.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand, as it thins the blood.
- Lay out comfortable, loose clothing that gives easy access to the tattoo area and that you don’t mind getting ink on.
On the day
- Eat a substantial meal 1–2 hours before your appointment to keep your blood sugar stable.
- Drink plenty of water and bring a snack and a drink for longer sessions.
- Shower and arrive with clean skin; you do not need to shave the area — your artist will do this if needed.
- Bring headphones, a book, or anything that helps you relax and pass the time.
